"Not Today" is the third single and second track from Alessia Cara's second studio album, The Pains of Growing. It was released through Def Jam Recordings on November 13, 2018.

Background and Release

The song was first heard of on October 25, 2018, when Cara announced the album's tracklist.[1] On November 13, 2018, she confirmed that there would be "one more surprise" before the album's release came along.[2] The song was then premiered on Beats 1 with Zane Lowe at 12 PM Eastern Time.

Cara revealed on Twitter that she wrote the song's lyrics from top to bottom[3] while she was feeling miserable and realizing it was okay to "bask in it until [she] was ready to try happiness again."[4] She stated that an older tweet of hers, which simply said "misery management", was a hint toward the song[5], since it is mentioned in the lyrics.

Lyrically, the song describes a person who is depressed and feeling extremely miserable. They understand that one day, they will be free of this sadness, but that they aren't quite at that point yet.

A lyric video was uploaded to YouTube on 13 Nov 2018, as seen below. The official music video was uploaded shortly after, on 27 Nov 2018, as seen below the lyric video.

Alessia Cara - Not Today

Someday I won't be afraid of my head
Someday I will not be chained to my bed
Someday I'll forget the day he left
But surely not today
One day I won't need a PhD
To sit me down and tell me what it all means
Maybe one day it'll be a breeze, ah
But surely not today, but surely not today

Oh, you don't know what sadness means
'Til you're too sad to fall asleep
One day I'll be snoozing peacefully
But surely not today, surely not today

One day I'll swear the pain will be a blip
I'll have the hardest time recalling it
I'll be the king of misery management
But surely not today
One day that song won't make me cry anymore (Oh no no)
One day I'll get up off the bathroom floor (Hey, yeah)
Oh, piece by piece I'll be restored
But surely not today, surely not
Eh, not today

Oh, you don't know what happy means
If it's only in your dreams
I'll be acquainted with my jollities
But surely not today, yeah, surely not today

Surely not-, surely, surely not-
Surely not-, surely not today

One day the thought of him won't hurt the same
Won't need distractions to get through the day
I guess I hope I'm gonna be okay
'Cause I'm not today
